Hints and Tips

As soon as I launch M1 Tank Platoon II, the game exits to Windows and there isn't an error message.
If you do not already have the M1 Tank II update , please download it from the link at the end of this page. If you got the patch from a site other than our website at www.microprose.com or if you have the patch that has the extension .ZIP rather than .EXE, click on the link at the end of this page to get the EXE version. The ZIP version caused problems with some people's machines. Probably 80% of the problems we see in Tech Support can be fixed by updating drivers. Check the website of your video card often. The newer the card, the greater the likelihood of there being several revisions to the software drivers in a short period of time. The same thing applies to all your peripherals, including your sound card, your CD_ROM, even your mouse. You should check at least every couple of months. A very common fix for hangups is adjustment of Windows' graphics performance. You can adjust acceleration by going into your Windows System Properties screen, choosing ""Performance"", then ""Graphics"" and sliding the bar one notch to the left. Also, are you shutting down any programs that might be running in background? That's a fairly common cause of unexplained crashes...Before launching the game, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Close Program dialog box. Click ""End Task"" on anything that's running besides Explorer and Systray. In rare cases, people's virtual memory (also known as your ""swap file"" may be cramped. This occurs on system where the hard drive to which Windows is installed is nearly full. The general rule of thumb is to have 2-1/2 times to 3 times the amount of RAM for your swapfile. By default, Windows handles swap file space automatically. If you are letting Windows handle the swap file, it will only permit half the available hard disk space to be used for Virtual Memory - so if free space on the disk becomes less than twice the amount of RAM, you could get weird problems. Providing adequate swap file space improves Windows' overall performance significantly. You can change your virtual memory settings in Control Panel/System/ Performance/Virtual Memory. If you set your own size it is a good idea to make the minimum and maximum the same. You will notice that you will no longer hear Windows ""grinding away"" on your hard drive. You can also improve the performance somewhat by doing a full disk defragmentation before setting up a permanent swap file. Can I call for smoke from the artilery units
NO There is no smoke for artillery units. Smoke is only for tanks.

I am having trouble saving a mission in one of the prebuilt (NATO or GULF WAR) scenarios.
Save battle Those Missions are not meant to be modifed. ""Save Battle"" should be used only for Campaign or Random.
I cannont use Alt-Tab to switch between M1 Tank Platton II and other Windows applications.
Do not use Alt-Tab M1 Tank Platoon is extremely resource-intensive and should not be used with any multitasking programs. It is strongly recommended that you shut down all programs before launching M1 Tank Platoon and avoid using Alt-Tab.
I can't seem to get passed the platoon screen
How to create a Platoon 1) Click on one of the panels 2) Click on ""Create Platoon"" 3) Select Service (Army/Marine) 4) Click on Arrow Buttons to select insignia 5) Click on text above insignia (e.g. ""1st Marine"" etc.) It seems many users forget the last step
I designate a target for my gunner and he confirms, but he doesn't seem to fire.
Update to 1.2 This could be caused by a couple of things: (1) Your Target is out of range (2) you don't have the 1.2 update. Click on the link(s) below to obtain the appropriate update file: Download the M1 Tank Platoon II update to version 1.2
I have selected ""Glide"" in M1 Tank Platoon's video configuration, but the game does not work.
You need to visit your 3dfx card's manufacturer to download the latest version of the Glide drivers.
In my main map screen, the buttons below the map either flicker or they cannot be seen.

My gunners seem to automatically use up the MPAT and STAFF rounds early on in the game. How can I get them to conserve those types of ammo
Hold Fire until close to target Give your platoon ""Hold Fire"" orders until their targets are within 2,000 meters. They will then select the shorter-range HEAT or SABOT rounds.
War College problems
War College Info The War College shortcut is usually created as part of the Start menu, but you can either create your own shortcut, or use the RUN comand from your Start button. The command line for firing up the War College is: D:OMOPLAY.EXE M1DSG.STA (the initial letter D above represents your CD ROM drive letter; if it is a letter other than D you must substitute the correct letter.) Make sure that Quicktime is on your machine by running QT16 in the DSG folder of your CD. It is the 16-bit version of Quicktime, whcih will not conflict with the 32-bit version of the same program if you happen to have it.
When I start up the War College, I get an error message about Quick Time.
If you open your CD-Rom using Windows Explorer, you will see a program called ""QT16"" in the DSG folder. Double Click on ""QT16"" to install QuickTime.
When I'm in the commander's hatch, the target mode keeps changing to SEARCH
Joystick movement Scan will change to Search automatically when the joystick is moved. Therefore if a joystick is drifting, the mode will continually switch to Search.

Don't use large maps Multiplayer is intended for Random and Campaign modes only. Note that some of the large maps can cause syncronization errors on some networks.
How can I get the best modem head-to-head performance
You should connect to another modem using TCP/IP Case: I cannot seem to get the Single Battle to work on our LAN.
How do I play M1 tank Platoon II on the Internet
LANs recommended M1 Tank Platoon II is not designed for the Internet. While it may be possible to play 2-player games via the internet, you will probably get unpredictable results. Network play is limited to LANs, which can better handle the large amount of data M1 Tank Platoon II sends and receives.
I'm trying to exit the mission by clicking on the ""Exit"" button in my map view, but it just takes me to another screen.
SHIFT-Q To end a mission, type SHITF-Q and wait for the commander to issue orders to stand down.
In the Lan game, the mission does not end although the objective is complete or all users' tanks have been destroyed
SHIFT-Q To end a mission, type SHITF-Q and wait for the commander to issue orders to stand down.
We're playing on a LAN, but we're seeing ""phantom"" tanks or ""phanton"" players who appear to be destroyed but who can still maneuver.
Please wait for all players The game needs time when starting for everyone to get suchronized. Before moving the platoon, everyone should stay at the initial staging are untill all players can see one another.
We're using TCP/IP for our LAN network protocol, and it doesn't seem to work.
TCP/IP and Dial up For TCP/IP connections, ensure the Dial-UP networking is set to ""Don't Prompt"" to use ""Dial-Up Networking."" This is set in the Dial-Up Networking program located in your Start Menu/Programs/Accessories/Dial-UP Networking icon. In addition, make sure that Dial-Up Networking is loaded before starting any multiplayer M1 Tank Platoon II game. DirectPlay required for multiplayer The first thing is to put the newest version of DirectPlay on your system. The install of M1 looks like it does this, but in fact the DirectPlay files are not on the CD. You can get it as part of DirectX 5.2 or higher, form Microsoft at the link below. Also if you got to your Start button and choose ""Run"" and type in SYSEDIT You can look at your WIN.INI file. If you do not see the following two lines you should add them in at the end: [LibsysNetwork] regulartcpipenabled=true Click on the link(s) below to obtain the appropriate update file: Download DirectX from the Microsoft site
When I start Moving in LAN play, some users' games exit out to Windows.
Wait for all players The game needs time when starting for everyone to get synchronized. Before moving the platoon, everyone should stay at the initial staging area until all players can see one another.
