Troubleshooting

Can I run Imperium Galactica under Windows 3.X?

This game is not designed to be run under Windows 3.x. Win 3.x takes up far too many of the system resources that our programs require for efficient and proper operation. When running this program, DO NOT LAUNCH FROM WINDOWS. Run it directly from DOS. If you are in the Windows environment, quit Windows and then run the program. (NOTE: Using the MS-DOS Icon does not exit you from Windows. That is a shell from Windows. You need to completely close down the Program Manager to totally exit from Windows. To test this, type the word exit. If nothing happens, you are completely out of Windows. If you return to Windows, then you were only shelled.) This would also apply to anything like MS-DOS's DOS Shell program or any other menu program, as well as Windows 3.x.

Can I run Imperium Galactica under Windows 95?

This game will run under Windows95 if you have a powerful enough system to do it. If you have just the minimum settings listed in the system requirements, you will probably run into problems. If you wish to play under Windows95, you should have the recommended system before doing so. While Windows95 is better at DOS games than Win 3.x, we still recommend playing from MS-DOS mode (not a window) in Windows95 for maximum compatibility.

The game will not run under Windows 95.

Try editing your configuration files so that EMM386 is removed or it has the AUTO switch installed.

I'm getting a message that says "Not enough free memory to run Imperium Galactica."

The minimum memory requirement for Imperium Galactica is 16 MB. Please be sure that your system meets all minimum requirements for installation and gameplay.

I have enough memory installed on my computer, but I still get "out of memory" errors, or Imperium Galactica locks up.

If you are running in Windows 95, shut down and restart in MS-DOS mode and install Imperium Galactica in DOS instead. This will free up a lot of the memory that is being used by Windows. Click on the Start button and select Shut Down. Then select Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode? and click OK. When your computer restarts, follow the DOS installation instructions.

If you are running in DOS, or Windows95 DOS mode, and still do not have enough free memory to run Imperium Galactica, you may need to create a boot disk that only loads your CD-ROM, sound card, and mouse drivers, and use it to boot your computer each time you play Imperium Galactica. There is a boot disk FAQ available that can help you create a boot disk.

I have a SoundBlaster compatible card but the sound will not work.

Imperium Galactica will function with 100% compatible SoundBlaster cards. Some cards that claim to be 100% SoundBlaster compatible are not, and Imperium Galactica will not work with these cards.

My sound card is a Sound Blaster or 100% compatible, and my sound works fine in Windows 95, but I still don't have sound in DOS.

Be sure that your sound card drivers are properly installed in DOS. When installing Imperium Galactica, if the sound card does not detect automatically, make sure that the values you enter for the port, IRQ, and DMA channel of your sound card match the SET BLASTER line in autoexec.bat. If you are unsure how to do this, please contact your sound card manufacturer for help.

I don't have sound, and I don't want to modify my system files just to make the game work.

You can create a boot disk that contains copies of your system files that are modified to play the game, and only use the disk when you plan to play Imperium Galactica. There is an FAQ document available that can help you create a boot disk. Your system manufacturer may also help you with this.

I have minor sound corruption under Windows 95.

On some machines, a PS/2 mouse set to IRQ 12 will cause minor sound problems. Running the game from MSDOS will play the sound correctly.

My sound card is set to an IRQ other than 5 or 7 and my card will not autodetect.

Some soundcards will not autodetect if the IRQ is not set to 5 or 7. Configure the soundcard manually or change the IRQ.

I have corrupted graphics.

Some Video cards may not be 100% VESA compatible. On the Setup Screen (after running Install) under the Options button is an option Change Video Mode During Animations. Set this to "+".

The animations keep freezing for long periods of time.

On the Setup Screen (after running Install) under the Options button, there is an option called "Change Video Mode During Animations". Set this to "-".

This game is running too slowly on my system.

If you notice the game running slowly on your system, here are a few suggestions for improving game performance.

  • Disable your upper memory manager (QEMM, 386Max, EMM386, etc.). Since Imperium Galactica is a protected mode game, the services of these programs are not needed.
  • Try creating a boot disk which will load the necessary drivers to play the game. To receive more information on how to create a boot disk, check our Boot Disk FAQ.
  • Use a VESA driver such as Scitech's Display Doctor, or one that comes with your video card.

The game is jerky when played under Windows 95.

Imperium Galactica runs optimally under DOS. Please restart in DOS. To do this, Click on the Start button and select Shut Down. Then select Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode? and click OK. When your computer restarts, follow the DOS installation instructions.

I get " RUNTIME ERROR 200 AT...."

Get the latest update patch. Install the patch to a temporary directory.

Then do the following at a DOS prompt:

    1. Switch to your cd-rom drive. (ie. D:\)
    2. Run the install file from the temporary directory that you installed the patch to. (ie. D:\> c:\temp\install <enter>)
    3. Now copy the patch into the newly created c:\imperium directory. (ie. At C:\temp\, type 'xcopy *.* /s c:\imperium') Chose yes to overwrite files.
    4. Delete the temporary directory and play the game.

When I try to research or build the Leviathan ( Flagship ), the game asks for CD #2. But the CD is already in the CD Drive and I have to reboot.

Sorry, but the Leviathan was removed from the game late in development. It was found that the game was too easy if you could build as many of these as you wanted. One Leviathan is given to you if you play the game at the highest difficulty level. The only way to avoid the error is not to research or build the Leviathan.
