Troubleshooting

Following are some questions and answers about technical problems that can occur while installing or playing Duke Nukem 3D.

Whenever I try to fire the shotgun, the game freezes up and I have to restart my computer!

If your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements, but firing the shotgun causes the game to freeze, you probably have another program with a conflicting extension. Turn off all extensions except QuickTime and Apple CDROM and re-install the game.

The video display is choppy or pauses often.

    Try the following solutions:

    • In Graphics Options, reduce to a 600 x 400 or smaller screen size, and set to Medium or Low detail.
    • Reduce the number of voices and the sound quality, or turn Sound Effects and/or Music off in Sound Options.
    • Exit the game and turn off Virtual Memory, RAM Doubler, AppleTalk, and any other programs or extensions running in the background.
    • Play an easier level so the computer has fewer monsters to keep track of.
    • While playing, press the < - > (minus) key to make the playable screen smaller.

Game play is slow or sounds disappear when action increases.

You will need to follow the directions on pages 20 and 21 of your manual on "optimizing performance". If after these steps you are still not satisfied with the performance of the game, check the number of fonts in your fonts folder. A Macintosh can have a maximum of about 136 fonts, but it will run optimally with a maximum of only 20 fonts in the folder. If you have more than 20, create a new folder in a different location (like the desktop), and drag the fonts into it. You may need to restart your computer. If after this, you still are not satisfied with the game play, your only other option will be to purchase more RAM, or upgrade your computer. Purchasing more memory is the single best way to increase the speed of the game. Memory is extremely inexpensive at the time of this writing, and increasing your available RAM will make all of your programs run better.

Dukematch games are out of sync, or I get a "Lost Packet" error

These error messages come up if there is a bad connection, or if one of the copies of Duke has the incorrect network settings. Make sure that each computer has selected the same map, the same number of players, the same connection type, and the same options selected.

How Can I play a Dukematch Game against someone who is running Duke Nukem on a PC?

Make sure that you have PC compatible mode selected in the network setup screen. If you're still having problems, check to see which version of Duke Nukem 3D is on the PC. They need to have version 1.5. If they don't have it, they need to download a file called Plutonium PAK v1.4 to v1.5 Patch from this website.

This patch works for Plutonium Pak or Duke Nukem Atomic Edition owners of the PC version. It does NOT work for owners of version 1.3. 1.3 owners will have to get the Plutonium Pak before playing against Macintosh versions of Duke Macintosh.

How do I set up a Joystick for Use with Duke 3D?

Before running the program, click on the apple at the top left hand corner of the screen. Drag down to control panels, and open your joystick manager. You will now need to map the keys to the joystick. For more information about mapping the keys to your joystick, you will need to consult your joystick documentation.

"Error reading script, no script separator found….etc.."

There is a patch available able that will upgrade your version of Duke 3D from 1.0 to 1.1. Version 1.1 fixes this error. You can download that patch here.

"Error Number 11"

These errors are usually caused by an extension conflict. Turn off all extensions except QuickTime and Apple CDROM and re-install the game.

"Error number 192" or "Unreadable Disk Error"

These error messages may be caused by a dirty or damaged disk. Remove the CDROM from the CDROM drive and examine the shiny underside for smudges, fingerprints, or scratches. Fingerprints and smudges can be cleaned using a CD cleaning kit, or warm water, mild non-abrasive dish soap, and a cotton cloth. Do not use abrasive cleansers or paper products, as these may scratch the CDROM.

If cleaning the CDROM does not fix the problem, check to make sure that you do not have the PC version of Duke Nukem 3D, as the PC version will not run on a Macintosh. If you do have the PC version, most software retailers will accept an exchange for the Macintosh version.
