The following problems have been fixed in version 1.0.2:
Loading a saved multiplayer game will now take longer over the Internet, MSN Gaming Zone and modem. The program would sometimes lose data packets in earlier versions of the game. This resulted in several problems, such as when a guest would be stuck at the Empire Selection screen after the host loaded a saved game. Birth of the Federation now uses DirectPlay's guaranteed send feature, which takes 2-3 times longer than the non-guaranteed send.
While a saved multiplayer game is loaded, the host will now see the following message: "Sending saved game..." Guests will see "Receiving saved game..."
Version 1.0.2 should fix the problem of the program not connecting over the Internet after you specify the host's IP address.
In version 1.0.1, if you steal your second ship and then merge it together with the first stolen ship on the same turn, the game will crash when it processes the turn. (If you merge with a different ship or merge the first ship into the second ship, the game will not crash). This problem has been fixed in version 1.0.2.
The crash that occurred if a starbase was built and then destroyed in the same turn has been fixed.
The following problems have been fixed in version 1.0.1:
The problem with the mouse slowing down over time has been fixed.
Memory leaks have been eliminated. You should no longer need to restart the game periodically to free up memory and restore game speed.
You can now view all the systems in the Solar System Inventory window.
In version 1.0, if you removed a troop transport that was working on an outpost, the unfinished outpost would remain. In version 1.0.1, the outpost is now correctly destroyed when the transport is removed.
Outposts and starbases can now repair themselves.
Cloaking ships owned by Cardassians can now cloak.
A crash caused by chatting during tactical combat in multiplayer games is fixed.
A random crash caused by clicking on a sector on the Main Galactic map is now fixed.
Ground combat bonuses from structures such as the Angosian Super Soldier Academy are now applied to troop transports and ground forces.
Out of synch errors in multiplayer have been fixed.
The Vendetta winning condition is now calculated correctly even if some of the empires are eliminated. In version 1.0, the Klingon Empire would be declared the victor as long as the Ferengi and Cardassians were destroyed, even if the Klingons themselves were eliminated.
The following enhancements have been made in version 1.0.1:
You can now install the music files to your hard drive in order to reduce CD-ROM access. This requires an additional 76MB of hard drive space.
If you do a complete install of the game (by copying the music files to your hard drive), then you can "spawn" the game for multiplayer games over a LAN. Just do a complete install on each computer. Then start the game on one computer with the Birth of the Federation disc in the CD-ROM drive. After the Main Menu appears, you can remove the game CD-ROM from the drive and start the game on another computer with the same game CD-ROM. Remember: this only works for multiplayer games over a LAN on computers with a complete install of the game.
You can now double-click on events in the Summary window to take you to the appropriate screen.
The scroll speed on the Main Galactic map has been increased.
You can now turn off the Borg but keep the rest of the random events by editing the STBOF.INI file to read "BORG=OFF."
The overall frequency of system-based random events (such as comet strikes, earthquakes and plagues) has been decreased.
To view your fleet's maintenance cost and population support, place your cursor over any of the text in the Empire Info panel.
The Solar System Inventory window is now alphabetized.
Turn processing time has been improved.
If the build queue in a specific system is empty, then you will see a message in the Summary window under Events (for example, "Sol System queue empty").
If there is insufficient power to automatically power a recently built structure that requires power, you will see a message in the Summary window under Events, such as "Federation Council built on Sol (unpowered)."
An ASCII text version of the tutorial is provided for easier printing. You can view this file by clicking the Start menu and selecting Programs > MicroProse > Birth of the Federation > Tutorial Guide Text. Or look for the TUTOR.TXT file in your game folder.
