Important note for Quicktime 4.1 users

We have become aware that Rainbow Six will not run if you have installed QuickTime version 4.1. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to re-install version 4.0 once 4.1 is installed. Fortunately, there is a workaround for this issue. For details, please see the section labeled "QuickTime Installation" below.

Missing Keyboard Reference Guide

Some copies of Rainbow six were shipped without the Keyboard Reference card. You may view a PDF version of the Rainbow Six Key Reference Card by clicking here - (207 Kb). We recommend printing this file or saving it to your hard drive for future reference.

Minimum System Requirements

The minimum requirements for Rainbow Six are:
  • A Macintosh G3 or PowerPC at 200Mhz or faster
  • 64MB of RAM
  • 275MB of hard disk space
  • A CD-ROM drive
  • A Rage Pro or better 3D accelerator card with Direct Support for Apple's OpenGL

Installation and Startup

To install Rainbow Six on your system:
  1. Close all open windows on your screen
  2. Insert the Rainbow Six CD into your CD-ROM drive.
  3. Double click the CD icon when it appears.
  4. In the window that appears, double click the Rainbow Six Installer icon.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions.
Please note that the Eagle Watch Mission pack is installed automatically when you install Rainbow Six. No additional steps are required to install Eagle Watch.

OpenGL installation:

After installing rainbow six, you must install OpenGL before playing or the game will not run. To install OpenGL, just double click the OpenGL install folder, and then double click the Installer icon. The installer will guide you through the rest of the installation process. When finished, you must reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Quicktime Installation:

The manual is incorrect in stating that Quicktime 4.0 is included on the CD. If you do not have Quicktime version 4.0 or higher installed on your computer, you'll need to download it from Apple's web site at http://www.apple.com.

NOTE: If you have installed QuickTime version 4.1 or higher, the game will not run until turn off Sound Manager 3.6 in your system extensions control panel. To do this, just follow these steps:
  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of your screen
  2. Select Control Panels
  3. Select Extensions Manager.
  4. Turn off Sound Manager 3.6.
  5. Save this configuration under a name of your choice (i.e. Rainbow Six Set)
  6. Restart your computer so that the changes can take effect.
To return to your original configuration after you're done playing, follow steps 1-3 above, select our original configuration, and then restart your computer.

Startup:

To launch, simply open the Rainbow Six folder on your hard drive, and then double click the Rainbow Six icon.

Once the game is running, select "Single Player" from the main menu, and then select "New" to begin.

Eagle Watch mission pack startup:

The Eagle watch mission pack is installed along with the original game. To access these new missions, weapons and operatives, simply choose the "Play Eagle Watch" option from the main Rainbow Six menu.

Error Messages

"An error appears during launch that reads 'The application 'Rainbow Six' could not be opened because 'OpenGLLibrary' could not be found'".
Apple's OpenGL software must be installed on your computer before the game can run. This software is provided on the CD for your convenience. See the OpenGL installation instructions above for more information.
"The game crashes with an 'Error type 2' message when loading a scenario or at some other point in the game."
These errors can occur for a variety of reasons. The most common cause is a conflict between the game and one or more of the Mac OS extensions that are currently loaded into your computer's memory.

To learn how do temporarily disable these extensions, please refer to our Macintosh General Troubleshooting FAQ.

Lockups & Crashes

"The game freezes or crashes back to the desktop during launch and doesn't report any kind of error message."
You may need to lower your monitor resolution to 640x480 in the 'Monitors' control panel. Higher resolutions can lead to unpredictable results when running this game. If this solution doesn't work, please read on:
"The lockup or crash occurs randomly or at a specific point in the game itself."

Video Problems

"I'm using an ATI card, and the screen turns black after launching the game or there are graphical problems while playing."
    1. Make sure that your ATI card has at least 6MB of video memory. The game cannot run if your card has any less than this.

    2. Download and install the latest version of ATI's Universal MAC driver from the ATI support website at http://support.atitech.ca.

    3. Download and install the latest version of Apple's OpenGL drivers from their website at http://www.apple/com/openGL.

    4. Change your desktop video settings to thousands of colors and a resolution to 800x600 or even 640x480 in the "Monitors and Sound" control panel.
"I'm using a 3dfx card and there are severe graphical or performance problems in the game."
Unfortunately, 3dfx has only released BETA OpenGL drivers for all of their cards on the Mac. These drivers are unsupported and can lead to unpredictable results. The game works best on ATI video cards.

Your best bet is to install the latest BETA driver from your card available from the 3dfx website at http://www.3dfx.com, but there is no guarantee that this will work.

Multiplayer Problems

I want to play the game with a friend, but the friend has a PC. Can we play multiplayer Mac vs. PC?"
Yes. However, MacSoft does not distribute the PC version of this game. For help with the PC version of the game, you must contact RedStorm Entertainment at http://www.redstorm.com or (919) 460-9778.
"I can't connect to servers on my Local Area Network or the Internet."
Rainbow six uses the TCP/IP network protocol to communicate with game servers. TCP/IP must be installed and properly configured on your system before you can play network games.

To set up TCP/IP, follow these steps:

    1. Click the Apple icon at the upper-left hand corner of your screen.
    2. Select Control Panel.
    3. Select TCP/IP.
    4. Enter all of the required information about your network hardware.*
    5. Select options and make sure that TCP/IP is active.

If the problem persists, follow steps 1 and 2 above and then make sure that Ethernet is selected and AppleTalk is not.

*If you do not know the required information about your network card, you'll need to contact the card manufacturer for assistance.
"My Mac is connected to a LAN that uses a firewall and I can't connect to multiplayer games on the Internet."
The firewall may be blocking the UDP packets that Rainbow Six uses to communicate with other computers on the Internet. Try using the "Behind Firewall" option in the multiplayer options screen. For this option to work, there must be a hole in the firewall at registered port 2346. Please note that using this option may result in a noticeable decrease in network performance!
"I can't find any Internet servers that are compatible with the Mac version."
A small utility called "Game Ranger" is included on the Rainbow Six CD that will help you find Mac servers that are running rainbow six on the Internet. Simply install and run this program and you should have no more trouble finding games.

Performance Issues

"Multiplayer games are choppy or just too slow to play."
Before playing on your LAN or the Internet, make sure that the Internet/LAN option in the multiplayer options menu is set to the connection type that you are using. If you will be playing against others on your LAN, set this option to LAN. If you will be connecting to servers on the Internet through a modem, set this option to Internet.

Please be aware that network and especially Internet games will always run less smoothly than single player games due to network traffic, bandwidth limitations, and a variety of other factors beyond our control.
"Game performance is poor when playing the single player game."
First, try turning off some of the options in the options menu. Fog effects, Music, and Max Sounds most directly affect game performance, especially on systems that barely meet the minimum system requirements.

If this doesn't help, try reducing the size of the screen while in the 3D action portion of the game. To do this, simply press the minus ( - ) key on your keyboard while playing.

If you installed using the minimal install option, re-install the game and pick "Full Install" instead to reduce slowdowns caused by your CD-ROM drive.

If all else fails, use the Utility software in the Rainbow Six folder to quit all of your other running applications and use lower quality 3D sounds.
