Check the system requirements as listed on the box and at the top of this document to make sure that your computer is capable of running this game. If your computer does not meet the requirements, then errors may occur when you try to run it, or the game may run too slowly to play.
We cannot help you to get the game running on a system that does not meet the minimum requirements.
If your system meets the requirements but the problem still occurs, then please see the section near the bottom of this document labeled "Standard Troubleshooting" for more help.
"During Launch, the screen just turns black or quits back to Windows without any error message."
There are several methods that you can try to fix this problem:
Shut down any other applications that you may have running on your system such as screen savers, virus scanners, etc.
If you are using a fast machine such as a Pentium 233 or faster, you may need to turn down video hardware acceleration. See the section below on "Turning down Windows' video hardware acceleration".
Try resetting your computer's video resolution to 640x480 with 256 colors.
Update your video card drivers.
For further information on any of these solutions, please see the following documents:
"The game randomly freezes, crashes, or locks up the computer."
First, shut down all other applications that may be running on your computer. Other applications can interfere with the game's operation. For instructions on how to do this, please see our Windows 95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ.
If the problem persists, you may need to turn down or disable Windows hardware acceleration like this:
Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop
Click on the Performance tab
Click on Graphics
Move the slider bar one notch to the left
Click on OK
Click on OK once more to exit the system properties panel.
If you still have problems, repeat this process until the game works, or you can't turn acceleration down any further.
If you have video hardware acceleration turned all the way down, and the game still won't run, you may need to turn off DirectX acceleration instead. For detailed instructions on how to do this, please see our DirectX Frequently Asked Questions.
"The game runs too slowly or performance is generally poor."
Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements as listed on the box and at the top of this document. You may not be able to improve the game's performance if your system doesn't meet these requirements.
Shut down all other applications that may be running on your computer, as other applications may interfere with the operation of the game. Other programs can include screen savers, virus scanners, Internet monitoring programs, or anything else that may be running on your system.
To see a list of programs that that currently running on your system, press the <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and <Delete> keys on your keyboard at the same time. You can then click on each program in the list and then click End Task to close it. DO NOT close the programs named Explorer and Systray as these are necessary to Windows!

If you area already playing in software, turn down the screen resolution, track detail, and viewing distance from the graphics options menu within the game.
"The mouse cursor moves too slowly in the game menus under Direct3D rendering."
Your computer or 3D card may not be fast enough for Direct3D mode in this game. Choose software rendering or software emulation from the configuration utility and then launch the game again.
"The graphics are blurred, discolored or include missing or garbled textures."
If you did not reboot after installation, do so now. Your system must be rebooted after installation or the graphics will look blurred at best.
If you already rebooted, please see the section near the bottom of this document labeled "DirectX and Driver Problems".

To learn how to enable AutoPlay on your system, or to learn how to see if your CD-ROM drive is in MS-DOS compatibility mode, please see our Windows 95/98

"The Installer starts to copy files, but then just quits to the desktop."
Make sure that you have enough hard drive space available on your system before installing. If you don't have at least 40 Megabytes free, the game can't install.
If you have enough space, check the shiny underside of the CD for fingerprints, smudges, scratches, or anything else that may cause your drive to have trouble reading it.
If the CD looks clean and undamaged, then your CD-ROM drive may be running in "MS-DOS Compatibility Mode".
First, check your speakers to make sure that they are turned on and that the volume controls are turned up. If they are, then check your windows volume controls by clicking on the small yellow speaker icon on your taskbar.
If you have already tried the solutions above and still can't hear sound, then you'll need to update your sound card drivers to the latest versions available.
NOTE:Instructions for setting up and playing multiplayer games can be found on pages 17-22 of your game manual!

This game uses Microsoft's DirectX for all graphics and sound effects. It cannot run properly unless DirectX version 6.1 or higher is installed on your computer. It may also exhibit problems if the video card and/or sound card in your computer are not 100% DirectX 6.1 compliant.
Re-install DirectX from the Harley Davidson Race Across America CD, then reboot your computer and try playing the game again. For instructions, see the section near the top of this document labeled "DirectX Installation".
If the problem still occurs, then you'll need to update your video and/or sound card drivers with the latest versions available from the manufacturer. For more information on this topic and contact information on a wide variety of hardware vendors, please see our How to Update your Drivers FAQ.
"I've encountered a problem that was not mentioned in this document."
REBOOT your computer after installation. Several updated system files are copied to your hard drive during installation which can't take effect until you reboot.
Make sure that your system meets the minimum system requirements as listed on the box and at the top of this document. If your system does not meet or exceed the minimum requirements, it will run poorly, or not at all.
Shut down all other programs that you may have running on your system prior to playing Harley Davidson Race Across America. Other programs can interfere with the operation of the game. For detailed instructions on shutting down all of your other applications, please see our Windows 95/98
General Troubleshooting FAQ.
Make sure you have plenty of room left you your hard drive, or windows may not have enough room for a swap file. This can cause some very strange problems.
Make sure that the CD itself is not dirty or damaged in any way. If the CD is dirty, it can be cleaned. Most computer stores carry inexpensive CD-ROM cleaning kits that will safely restore your CD. If you want to try cleaning the CD without a kit, you can wash the CD using lukewarm water, MILD NON-ABRASIVE dish soap, and a very soft and clean COTTON cloth. Do NOT use any kind of paper product or abrasive soap to clean the CD, as these WILL scratch! Once the CD is clean, be sure to let the CD dry completely before inserting it into your CD-ROM, or damage may result.
If the CD is scratched or physically damaged in any way, you may need to send it in for replacement. For our mailing address and other important information regarding replacements, please see our Consumer Service Policies and Information.
Try uninstalling, and then re-installing the game.
