Dive - PC

Troubleshooting

Yes, I know this is a DOS game but I want to run it in Windows 95/98 Anyway!
Dive needs expanded (EMS) memory. There are two things you need to do to get Dive to work. The first thing you need to do is ensure that "NOEMS" is not in your config.sys file as part of the line containing "EMM386.EXE". The second thing you need to do is create a DOS shortcut to dive with maximum extended (EMS) memory selected rather than auto.

The following is a step by step walk through of both steps.

    PART 1. CONFIG.SYS. EDITING.

    1. Select Run... from the start menu.
    2. Type in SYSEDIT and press enter.
    3. A screen should come up with a series of sub windows containing all of your system setup files.
    4. Select the config.sys window from the window menu.
    5. Find the line that contains EMM386.EXE.
    6. If this line contains NOEMS delete NOEMS from the line.
    7. Save the file and close the window.
    8. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

    PART 2. Creating DOS shortcut.

    1. Right click on an open part of your desktop.
    2. Select New then click on Shortcut.
    3. Click on browse.
    4. Use the down arrow to select the CD ROM drive.
    5. Click on Dive.exe
    6. Click on Open.
    7. Click on Next>, then on Next> a second time.
    8. Select an Icon.
    9. Click on Finish.
    10. The Icon should be on the desktop.
    11. Right click on the Dive.exe Icon.
    12. Select properties.
    13. Select the memory tab.
    14. Change the Expanded (EMS) memory to the largest number available. Ex. 16354 if you have a 16 meg system memory.
    15. Click on O.K.
Making a Boot Disk using Windows 95/98
    1. From Windows 95/98 ... click on START, SHUTDOWN and RESTART COMPUTER IN DOS MODE.
    2. Insert a blank disk in your A: drive.
    3. Type CD\ [Enter].
    4. Type FORMAT A: /S [Enter]. When asked for Volume Label, type DIVEBOOT [Enter].
    5. When asked to format another, type N for no.
    6. At the C:> type:
      1. COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT A: [Enter].
      2. COPY CONFIG.SYS A: [Enter].
    7. Type: A: followed by EDIT CONFIG.SYS [Enter].
    8. Confirm the following two lines exist EXACTLY like below. If not, add them.

      DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
      DEVICE=C:\WINDOWSEMM386.EXE RAM /D=64

    9. Make sure that any lines that load any TSR's (screen savers, anti-virus, memory managers i.e. quemm etc.) are preceded by the letters REM so the computer ignores them.
    10. When finished, select FILE, EXIT. When prompted to save, say YES.
    11. Restart your computer (make sure to leave the disk in your A: drive).
    12. Change to your CD ROM drive. For example, if your CD ROM drive is drive D you would type D: and press [Enter].
    13. Type DIVE and press [Enter] to start the game.

When finished playing, remove the disk from your A: drive and restart your computer.
Correcting the error - "INT EMS MEMORY NOT FOUND"
Follow the above instructions for creating a boot disk to use for starting the game.
Mouse Pointer Jumps all over the Screen
Some Computers that have Have Windows 95/98 Pre-loaded loose the mouse driver when you 'Restart in MS DOS mode'.

In most cases you can get your mouse driver to load by typing the word 'MOUSE' at the C:\ pryor to starting DIVE.

If that doesn't work you can locate your mouse directory by typing

    DIR MOUSE.COM /S

    at a C:\.

For example: If the result of the above command results in a response that looks something like 'C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM', then switch to that directory and type 'MOUSE'.

    CD\MOUSE [Enter]
    MOUSE [Enter]

    Then start DIVE)

IF NONE OF THE ABOVE HELPS:

Call the people that sold you the computer and ask them how to get your mouse driver loaded in DOS.
