i was reading an interesting analysis of evangelion in anime invader a few months back... about its connection to various religions and some stuff that mr Freud came up with... it was good actually

Theres two D/C DVDs. One called Resurrection (I've got), thats got episodes 21-23 of the original series, and a D/C version of each. They clear up some stuff that they originally cut, its good :)
The second is the same sort of thing, but with eps 24-26, but isn't quite as good apparently....I ain't got it...yet :D

Theres some decent extras on it too...theres a interview with two of the yanks who are making the live action movie, with loads of production sketches and stuff.

Well there aren't really any major flaws with Evangelion, but it's not perfect. For example, i've seen other anime that has better art....

Looks great..with the exception of the characters! Everything looks sweet - this is the only live action i have EVER said looks sweet! - but comeon they characters are meant to be ~12-3 NOT 17 year olds! 14 yr olds actually. only 14 yr olds can pilot evas, although they dont explain why in the episodes.. there is a theory that says that human cells regenerate once every 14 years, so my guess is that this is why older ppl cant pilot them.

u're confusing it with the Absolute Terror (AT) field :) that's what was mentioned.. it's actually a theory by Freud, according to which, children with weak parental figures turn out disassociative and shut themselves off, thus creating an AT field. if u look at the relationship every pilot had with their parents it makes even more sense

Regarding the live action movie...have you seen the line up of proposed actors??

I've heard they want the harry potter kid to be Shinji, the lizzie mcguire girl to be Asuka (Kate-Rose) a girl who was in BR and Kill Bill to be Rei (Ray) and then Colin Farrel, some other actors like that...can't remember exactly right now, I'll have to look it up agian.

I thought they were just Americanizing it, filling it with American actors and generally destroying Eva as we know it. ;)
As for which part of the series it'll cover, I think it'll be a re-imagining, i.e. condensing it all into a couple of hours.

I could be wrong though, i'm just cynical about the whole thing.

The main thing that made me worried was the changing of the names...they are blatently changing it to make it more accessible to the n00b american audiences - and in turn to make more money!!!

As for the "slug" names used in the preliminary script (NOT the final version!!!) which appear on the production drawings, they are only used so as not to refer to them as "Pilot A" and "Captain B" etc. As has been widely discussed, the cast will be international, and mostly of European descent. Meaning, for example, if Daniel Radcliffe (Anime Insider's suggestion - NOT mine!) were to play the lead male role, it would be pretty stupid to call an ENGLISH boy "Shinji." Therefore, "Kate Rose" for example is the name they are using for the designs is in place of "Pilot of 02" or whatever.

True...the games were only released in Japan...there was one called Evangelion 64 that was on the N64 that I played on an N64 emulator, that was translated quite nicely tho...
And its come up before, but there is a game on the PS2 in Japan called Neon Genesis Evangelion 2 that is a sequel to the series apparently...there is a petition to get a US release, but I don't think it'll ever get a translation...

I just got the ''Genesis Reborn'' 2nd Directors Cut DVD on import today...and it was interesting.
I'd heard before that there isn't much extra content like in the 1st D/C DVD, but I figured I wanted to complete my perfect collection of Evangelion DVDs :)
Anywho, there are some cool extra scenes, like Kaworu talking to Seele, and him talking to Rei, but not much else...however, there is a VERY nice extra feature - a 10/15 minute slideshow of loads of concept art from the live action movie.
Its lookin pretty good, but Rei (Ray, lol) with black hair! And I don't like the idea of the name changes...but who knows if they'll stick with em...

The japanese writing says Evangelion, and as I can make out, the little writing says:

ADV FILMS presents in association with GAINAX ''EVANGELION''
Then something about Hideaki Anno, who wrote/directed the series, then WETA WORKSHOP who are making the film (the same Doods who did LOTR) and at the end NEW DIGITAL LTD.

I'm guessin that Anno is either simply getting an acknowledgement that the series is his, or he's helping out with the film. Please god, let it be the latter!!! :)

Well...heres the thing...
There are 26 episodes of the original series, thats 8 DVDs...
Then you'll be begging for more, so theres the two movies - ''Death and Rebirth'', and ''End of Evangelion''...
Then, if your a super-uber fan like me by then, you'll want the two Directors Cut DVDs aswell, which have the last six episodes re-cut, re-dubbed, and with extra scenes and stuff chucked in...

And, yes, that is a lot! :)

the first volume is brilliant, its action from the word go, and it introduces you to the characters brilliantly. i've just purchased volume 2 today, and its just as great. its essential that you buy neo genesis evangelion.

Nah the dvds off ebay are fine to buy - pirated would be if they were selling home made versions of the evangellion dvds. I.e. you opened the box to find a writable dvd and shit reception you know youve been ahd ;)

Yeah, Evangelion is very good...but not the best.
I think my fave anime series is pretty obvious :p
The film'll probably suck to all the ''Hardcore'' fans, but no doubt it'll probly win a couple of hundred oscars in a few years (like LOTR)

You can be pretty certain that the harry potter guy wont be in it (well deffinately not as shinji) as he would be about the right age now I think :confused: but in a couple of years when they start choosing the cast, he's just gonna be too old! The last official thing said that any of the actors they choose for the three kids (I dont know all their names, so shoot me) would have to be about 12 right now

Drifting off topic I see...
And this isn't exactly on topic but...

Has any one else heard about the live action Akira trilogy of movies that are supposedly in the works?
Apparently, they are basing the story on the manga rather than the anime movie, so it should be pretty good (of corse, so should the Eva movie in theory...)
When I finished reading the manga I thought how much of a great series it would make...they were forced to cut SO much out of the movie, but its still a classic :)

Akira is (or the movie is) basically about a teenage member of a motorcycle gang who is involved in an accident, awakening dorment teleknetic powers and other cool stuff from within him...he then, like anyone in that position would, tries to find out why - but thats too boring so he decides to destroy everything in his path, whilst the other members of the gang and the army try to stop him. Thus creating one of the classics of anime film-making :)
Apparently, its also one of two films (the other being Ghost in the Shell) that has been watched most by non-anime fans. Spirited Away will probably join those ranks soon too...

Ghost in the Shell is a fairly old movie now, but is pretty good all the same. Spirited Away tho is very recent...I think it came out last year. It was oscar nominated, and is one of Jonathan Woss's favourite films of last year, apparently. I haven't actually seen it yet tho...

I thought Spirited Away may have been shown on BBC at some point, cos they put Belleville Rendezvous on...but I don't think it'll get an airing on TV for a while, which is more than can be said for most anime movies!

Ok, questions on eva after I just watched the first 4 eps, some numbers just don't add up: What happened to the first or second eva pilot? Shingi's the third, and Rei's the first or second, but what happened to the other one? And how come the second angel we see is named the 4th angel?

So glad I decided to watch it in Japanese with subtitles yesterday, now I know a few things that I couldn't quite pick up when I was just listening (and I got to hear Shinji being called baka quite a bit :) )

dvds are creul they give you 4 or five in the fist then go down to 4 or 3....
guess its just to draw you in...

Grrr:mad: Whats with the second dvd? I looked in every store I can think of thats sells dvds, and they all had the Evangelion series. Apart from dvd 2. Whats with that?

On the cover of the second DVD, Rei's on the front...well, waving I guess you could say :)
But I dunno why that one would be out of stock when all the others are...
And regarding ''Death and Rebirth'' and ''End of Evangelion'' -
The first part of ''Death and Rebirth'' is ''Death'' - a recap of the entire series, up to episode 24...with a couple of extra scenes, and its redubbed and reanimated too :)
The second part of ''Death and Rebirth'' is ''Rebirth'' (surprise, surprise lol), which is a remake of episode 25, the way the original team who made the series wanted episode 25 to be.
''End of Evangelion'' includes ''Rebirth'', and then the true ending to Evangelion - the remake of episode 26, which is about an hour long :)

If you've seen the series, enjoyed it, and haven't seen the movies, then you MUST see them!! The series is completed by these, and makes it about 10x better :D

Watch the series, then the movies...the D/C's aren't essential viewin...just if ya wanna be a hardcore Eva fan (YAY! Like me!!!!).
If you love it enough, you'll wanna see as much of it as you can...

Then theres the Manga and Platinum collection...but I'm not hardcore enough to get the latter lol :)
